Unknown to many scuba divers visiting Phuket: Out from Kamala beach near Patong a dive company called Merlin Divers offers on a daily basis half day scuba diving trip with 2 dives.
The divers and snorkeling customers meet at the shop by 8.45 am. The staff has already put all the tanks and dive gear onto the dive boat by the time the customers do arrive. Once everybody is ready we board the dive boat and ride to the dive site. The boat ride is between 20 – 30 minutes maximum. In other words relatively very short boat rides for Phuket dive trips. A unique feature of the half day trip is the fact that there are hardly any other dive boats around on the dive sites Merlin Divers is using.
All dive sites laying along the west coast of Phuket and basically in front of the beaches of Nakalay, Kamala, Surin and Bangtao are shallow with a depth of maximum 20 meters and therefore ideal for all levels of scuba divers. And since the sites are easy and not very deep Merlin Divers offers the customers bottom times of 60 minutes. Yes – 60 minutes is the norm and not only 50 minutes which is the norm for diving day trips around Phuket. The tours are also called Kamala Diving.
Half Day Scuba Trip Phuket
The dive boats used are converted long-tail boats and their layout is specifically adapted and built for scuba diving. They have wider than usual benches to sit on – actually that wide that your tank can fit behind the divers back as well while the diver is still seated. There are tank racks on the boats which hold the tanks securely in place standing upright with or without gear assembled. The boats have a roof protecting the divers from the sun or rain. And there is a specifically stable and deep into the water reaching ladder to make the climb back into the boats easy for every diver.
